Timmy Curran Releases New Album VerseS & Set To Release New Surf Film:The Union Express

TIMMY CURRAN RELEASES SOPHOMORE ALBUM

After three years of worldwide touring with artists such as Foo Fighters, Incubus, Switchfoot and Angels & Airwaves, Timmy Curran is set to release his sophomore album titled VerseS. Recorded in the rolling hills of Ventura at Brotheryn studios, VerseS has been described by Curran as his most intimate and personal album yet. Known for his unique guitar and vocal stylings, Curran partnered with producer, Todd Hannigan, whose specialty is pairing an artist’s musical character to their own unique personality. The track titled "If I Only Had A Way" was kept solo acoustic, similar to his first musical recordings. VerseS goes beyond Curran’s trademark guitar and offers listeners songs accompanied by piano (“Castle" and "Crazy Love"), electric guitar ("Believe", "Forever" and "Swim") and a unique song accompanied by the harp ("January"). “Variety was important to me on this album. My music is evolving and I want the listeners to come on that journey with me. I was inspired by all different types of music and I hope it will show in this album.” said Curran. VerseS will be released under his own indie label, Citsuca Music. "I just wanted to put this album out under my own little label for now, keep it simple and be able to keep track of what's going on." VerseS is going to be a digital only release worldwide.

Currans debut album Word Of Mouth saw strong international success in countries like Japan and Australia, especially due to the fact that he decided to release the album worldwide for free. In doing so, Curran has had a great underground following and support at his shows. Word Of Mouth was re-released on Adeline Records in 2008 and achieved major success with the single "Blue Eyes", which made the top 20 on VH1 countdown. "Lonely" another track from Word Of Mouth was featured in the trailer for the hit movie "Marley & Me". VerseS will be available on itunes March 10th.

Timmy will be touring VerseS along with his new surf film "The Union Express". In addition to recording his latest album, Curran has also been filming up and down the coast of California for the last 2 years. "The Union Express" directed by Josh Landan, is a film about Curran travelling by train and surfing with friends from San Francisco to San Diego in their hometowns. The film stars along with Curran, Dane Reynolds, Rob Machado, Taylor Knox, Damien Hobgood, Nathaniel Curran and many many more. Be sure to visit timmycurran.com or myspace.com/timmycurran for tour dates and trailers of VerseS and "The Union Express" touring this April & May.

These have been long promised and now they are coming !

An introduction to OceanGybe:

The OceanGybe Expedition is a global sustainable sailing expedition to explore the remote coastlines of the world, in search of adventure and garbage. Our goal is to bring awareness to the vast tracts of undocumented ocean pollution that afflicts every coastline and affects the peoples who depend on them for survival. Over the past two years, Hugh Patterson, Ryan and Bryson Robertson have been sailing around the world documenting the polluted state of our oceans and the isolated beaches due to plastic and other detritus. They have sailed some 45 000 ocean km, visited almost 30 different countries, crossed the three major oceans of the world and presented their findings and ocean conservation message to thousands of school children globally.

Surf artist, Drew Brophy at HTO    June 19-21, 2009

Renowned Surf artist, Drew Brophy, to appear at HTO in Victoria

Canada’s oldest surf shop, HtO, invites you to come to the shop to watch renowned international surf artist Drew Brophy apply his talents to HtO’s Eagle in the City.

Eagles in the City is a fundraising initiative run by the BC Lions Society to support the BC Lions Society’s Easter Seal Services, an organization dedicated to helping children with disabilities throughout British Columbia.

A 7’6” fiberglass eagle will be the blank canvas for Brophy to create his work of art, which will be auctioned for charity at a gala event later in the year. All proceeds will be donated to charity, and the lucky bidder will have a unique piece of art and history to display at a location of their choice.

Drew Brophy will be working on the eagle at HtO Sun, Surf and Swimwear at 1314 Broad St. from June 19 – 21. Brophy will be coming up from California to donate his time and skills to make this project possible. Customers, tourists and Victorians and local surfers alike will be able to watch as Brophy creates his art before their eyes.

HtO has been part of the Victoria cityscape for 30 years, and continually contributes to local events and charities. It is our privilege to be a part of this project, and to be able to welcome a world-famous artist to our community.

We appreciated any help to ensure that this event is a positive and successful one. There will also be limited edition prints for sale and giveaways for spectators.

Shane Philip Returns to the Waverley Hotel    Cumberland, June 19, 2009
Shane Philip Returns to the Waverley Hotel - Cumberland, June 19, 2009

Shane Philip Returns to the Waverley Hotel, June 19

Swelling in primordial pulses and wholloping whoops, the tacit tones of Shane Philip's didgeridoo hold the power to still listeners into silence or encourage audiences to get up and fill the dance floor. Meanwhile his hands will be skilfully juggling between shaking up rhythms with his aslatua, driving the audience with his djembe and sliding out grooves on his Weissenborn-style guitar while his foot taps in earthshaking electronic kicks wherever they might fit. He is a one-man show weaving sounds that inspire audiences anywhere he goes.

Whether playing with spirited mayhem or with mellow gold, Shane Philip presents songs that are consistently well crafted and ultimately very dancy. He has played 3 sold out shows at the Waverley and thrilled audiences at summer festivals in Western Canada including last year's Big Time Out. Don't miss his Friday, June 19th gig at the Waverley... the Valley's favourite live music venue. Included in his performance will be a painting on canvas by David Oram during the show. This will be auctioned off at the end of the night.

Advance tickets are only $10 and available at Bop City Records in Courtenay, the Waverley and by phone at 250 336 8322. For further info visit waverleyhotel.ca. or call 250 898 1056.

The Big Time Out    Cumberland, Aug 15, 2009
Sam Roberts Band tops the bill at The Big Time Out - Cumberland, Aug 15, 2009

Sam Roberts Band tops the bill at The Big Time Out 2009
June 6, 2009. Cumberland, BC.

The Big Time Out, Cumberland BC’s annual music extravaganza, has just announced its 2009 performers headlined by Juno-winner Sam Roberts. This year’s lineup is a carefully-selected mix of electro, soul, brass and old-fashioned rock, all united in the cause of great music.

At the top of the bill is Montreal rocker Sam Roberts and his band. Fresh from winning 2009 Juno awards for Artist of the Year and Rock Album of the Year, Sam Roberts’ driving and melodic tunes have been mainstays of summer mix tapes for almost a decade.

Sam Roberts broke on to the Canadian scene with The Inhuman Condition in 2001. The albums’ warm, infectious melodies made it an instant classic, led by the straight up hooks of Don’t Walk Away Eileen and Brother Down.

Roberts’ most recent album, Love at the End of the World, immediately grabbed the number one spot on the Canadian charts, and the lead single, Them Kids, was an instant hit.

Indie-sensation Mother Mother is returning to The Big Time Out as one of the most important new bands in Canada, quickly selling out the Commodore and with the first single from their new album getting heavily-playlisted everywhere. Originally from Quadra Island, the quintet quickly caught the eyes and ears of the public with their tight, cynically-sweet lyrics and intricate arrangements. The band deftly walks the line between complexity and pure pop, resulting in a totally unique and undeniably great sound.

Also returning to this year’s festival is Delhi 2 Dublin. The band’s hard-driving, high-energy and irresistible Celtic-Punjabi fusion is a perennial favourite in Cumberland. Delhi 2 Dublin first came together at the Vancouver Celtic Fest in 2006 and got national attention as part of 2007’s Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill. Delhi 2 Dublin’s five members perform with everything from the tabla to the fiddle to the laptop, remixing genres and cultures in the process.

Those who like their music big and brassy need look no further than another of the festival’s acts, the MarchFourth Marching Band. Calling the Portland-based group a band is an understatement; March Fourth’s 22 musicians are supplemented by four stilt walkers and a six-member female dance troupe. Fire breathing is also included.

Vancouver-based Sex With Strangers is covering the pure, unadulterated post-punk-indie-electro portion of the festival. Since being chosen by SPIN magazine as one of seven “undiscovered bands you should hear,” SWS has been confounding listeners and delighting audiences with their hyper-eclectic tracks and live show.

Mihirangi falls at the other end of the musical spectrum. Originally from New Zealand, Mihirangi brings funky, acoustic soul in a lush, rich and complex style. Her very unique show builds up intricate harmonies and tribal rhythms into soul-drenched bliss. On this tour she is joined by DJ Katch from Frankfurt. The chemistry between these two artists is exceptionally dynamic.

Toronto’s musical collective LAL is the final link in this year’s lineup. During their decade together, they’ve perfected a blend of South-Asian roots, West Indian fruits, and melancholic vocals with jazz sensibilities, hip hop influences, down tempo grooves, broken soul, and electro.

The Big Time Out takes place on Saturday, August 15 from 11am to 1am, and will include the legendary Union Saloon, the Chai tent, collaborative dance pieces, acrobatics, aerialists, vendors and non-stop music. Early bird tickets are available for $45 until June 21st and $55 until July 21, online or at Lyle’s Place on Yates St. They are also available by phone at 250 334 4885. Kids 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.

Harrison Music Festival - June 26-28, 2009

Harrison Music Festival

Extreme Safety Concerns Cause Harrison Music Festival Postponement

Harrison Music Festival organizers had to make an agonizing decision after extensive discussions with the Agassiz RCMP branch regarding spectator, band participants and vendor safety in the events remote area location. On the advisement of Sergeant Mike McCarthy and event consultants, the organizers have decided to postpone the event until a safer location has been selected.

The primary problem was the inability of emergency vehicles to access the originally selected area which was approximately 45 kilometers north east of Harrison Hot Springs. Along with that, Sergeant McCarthy pointed out how many accidents, some fatal, had happened on the hazardous road to the event site. To further compound the problems, cell phones don’t work in this area either which meant if someone was unfortunately injured, it would take at least an hour to get to professional medical assistance. Despite outstanding event organization and every effort to make it 100% safe, the organizing committee didn’t hesitate in postponing it.

A search is currently being conducted to locate a safe site that will hold as many as 2000, is easily accessed by emergency vehicle and spectators and guarantees everyone’s safety.

Kelly Slater & Andy Irons in 'A Fly In The Champagne' : Canadian Premiere - Vancouver, BC, May 5, 2009

Kelly Slater & Andy Irons in 'A Fly In The Champagne' : Canadian Premiere

Quiksilver has partnered with Billabong. Did you have to read that line again? Yes, we have come together to support our top team rider (Kelly Slater) who stars alongside Andy Irons in the movie A Fly In The Champagne. Both Quiksilver and Billabong are sponsors of this project and Transworld Surf is handling the distribution for Irons Brothers Productions who produced the film. Below are the details of the film and the Canadian premiere.

  • Canadian Premiere – Vancouver, BC
  • May 5, 2009
  • Tunnel Multi-Lounge 622 West Pender
  • Doors 9pm - Movie 9:30pm

The rivalry between Andy Irons and Kelly Slater has been one of folklore for a decade. The two most influential surfers of all-time have had a much-publicized dislike for each other over the years.

Irons Brothers Productions embarked on a two-week excursion to Indonesia with Andy and Kelly to capture what everyone thought could never happen, a trip together. What ensued was groundbreaking and captivating. Shot from land, boat, and water, Irons Brothers Productions captured history. This project was shot solely on HD and film cameras. With co-sponsoring from Quiksilver®, Billabong®, and Transworld Surf®, and featuring the 2 best surfers in the world, there is no doubt that this will be a highly successful project.

The April 2009 issue of Transworld surf is dedicated to this project and has not only some great images, but great insight into the project. Check it out!

legends

A Winter Tale

Mythical discoveries in the natural playgrounds of the world, this is the inspirational winter adventure of some of the best riders in the world that has never been told before.

Legends takes O’Neill snowboarders and skiers around the world – from Japan to Turkey – to experience not only the spectacular terrain, but also explore the stories and myths behind each location.

Jeremy Jones, the world’s best freerider, was just one of the snowboarders inspired by the project. Despite endless winters in the stunning natural surrounds and riding of Alaska, it was the journey of discovery that had Jeremy enthralled. "Every year I get presented with a lot of really cool film projects," he says. "When this first came up I was committed to something else. Then they got back to me and said they were going to Turkey, and I said: ‘well, I am going with you."

Along with O’Neill skiers and filmmakers, Nicolas and Loris Falquet, Jeremy travelled to Turkey where they uncovered and immersed themselves in the roots of snowboarding.

"That is one of the best trips I have ever had," says Jeremy. "From a cultural standpoint it was one of the most – ‘oh my god I can’t believe that just happened’."

The group, which included Stefan Gimpl, scored some incredible freeriding in the Cackar Mountains, and also discovered a village where the locals have been snowboarding on homemade wooden boards for 150 years. "Meeting Celime, the oldest rider in the village, was inspirational. This is someone who has been snowboarding for 62 years," says Jeremy. "One of my big questions was – ‘do you have any advice for me?’ He said: ‘ride all the time and you’ll be happy and healthy.’"

The story of Legends starts in the tranquil stunning mountain ranges of Japan, where director, Nicolas Falquet, and his brother, Loris discovered the legend of ‘Yuki-Onna’, whose name means ‘snow woman’.

"We knew no one in Japan when we arrived there," says Loris. "It was a great adventure finding someone who could tell us about the legend of Yuki-Onna." Discovering spectacular backcountry in Japan was no easy task either. "You’re not allowed to ski off-piste in Japan, so they kept on taking away our ski passes," Loris says.

This sense of adventure is encapsulated throughout the entire film as the Falquet brothers explore every corner of the globe during the 2007 season, throughout day and night.

Along with Jeremy Jones and Mitch Toelderer, they rode fresh powder under the full moon in the small Swiss resort of Les Marecottes - an experience which Jeremy Jones won’t forget: "You watch the sun set, the moon rise and then ride down a spine at 4.30am. Then you watch the moon set and the sun rise as you go home. Then you wake up later that day and think – was that a dream? It’s incredible," he says.

With the young and exciting talent of Canadian O’Neill rider Seb Toutant, they explored the legendary snow of the Canadian Rockies, and by plane with one of the legends of the skies, they explored the European Alps with some of the most exciting freestyle riders in Europe at the moment.

Travis Rice Pioneers New Tricks and Technology in Season’s Most Anticipated Snowboard Film

Vancouver, British Columbia (September 24, 2008) – "That’s It. That’s All," the groundbreaking snowboard film produced by Brain Farm arrives to Canadian viewers this fall. Travis Rice invites Canada to join in the epic ride, as he and a dream team crew set out to find the new zones, tricks and a whole new perspective on snowboarding.

"’That’s It, That’s All.’ is epic snowboarding meets Planet Earth," explains Curt Morgan, President of Brain Farm. "The film is a visually stimulating piece of work that pulls in a wider audience by encompassing the most progressive riding in the world with unbelievable travel and nature footage."

In an attempt to push the progression of action sports films, "That’s It, That’s All." raises the bar on both the level of athleticism and quality of production. For two years, producers Rice and Morgan traveled the world in search of conditions that capture the essence of snowboarding. This quest took the riders to New Zealand, Japan, Germany, Canada, Valdez, AK, Jackson Hole, WY and Mammoth, CA. Using the features found in these locations, Rice began inventing new tricks including the first landing of a double backside rodeo 1080 (spinning three times, while going through 2 inversions).

Using state of the art equipment with access to a dream team of snowboarders, the producers created a visual snowboard film that redefines the genre. A dozen models of cameras were used during production including for the first time in core action sports, the Wescam 35, to film stable follow-cam shots on snowmobiles and the Cineflex HD, to capture steady aerial shots from helicopters.

"We put everything we humanly could into the production of this film," said Travis Rice, Snowboarder and Co- Owner of Brain Farm. "Quiksilver and Red Bull stepped up to help us match top caliber riding with the highest possible production quality. Our hope is to showcase snowboarding in a whole new light."
