DC Nationals 2009 - Skateboard Championship

DC KING OF VANCOUVER A HUGE SUCCESS
Over $10,000 and Unprecedented Exposure for Canada’s Top Unsigned Street Skaters

DC King of Vancouver officially went off this weekend, the latest installment of DC’s amateur skateboarding contest at street spots all over the world. After two days of competition at two separate sets of obstacles at the skate plaza in downtown Vancouver, congratulations go to JS Lapierre on his win and take of $7,000.

DC King of Vancouver (KOV) was the culmination of the 2009 DC Nationals series—unsponsored ams qualified from all over Canada to skate this weekend’s contest.

With the plaza divided in half, day one saw the ams skating the tech half—the four stair, long bar, ledge and bank. Everyone was divided up into four heats—with skaters ranging in age from 13 to 27, the am talent in Vancouver is strong. The judges kept the scores a secret at the conclusion of day one, adding anticipation for day two.

Day two was considerably more challenging on the burly section of the plaza. With a seven stair with handrail, larger hubba, and a flat bar to the end of the big four, the 41 skaters certainly had choices on day two.

When it all was calculated, Lapierre reigned supreme, taken first place both days to earn the DC King of Vancouver crown. Out of the $10,000 given to the top six KOV finishers, Lapierre took home $7,000. Second and third place went to Dallas Ives and John Hanlon respectively.

DC not only hooked up Canadian ams this weekend, but also the City of Vancouver and the skate community in general. At the conclusion of DC King of Vancouver, a check for $10,000 was presented to the City for repairs and maintenance on the downtown skate plaza. The money helps ensure the plaza remains the center for the Vancouver skate scene for years to come.
