Whistler’s Momentum Ski Camps celebrate 20th aniversary

WHISTLER’S MOMENTUM SKI CAMPS CELEBRATE 20TH ANIVERSARY
Olympic Gold Medalists, World and X-Games Champions Continue To Inspire Next Generation Of Skiers

Whistler, BC June 10, 2011 – Momentum Ski Camps are celebrating their 20th Anniversary this summer when their camps kick off on June 17. What started out as a small mogul program of under 30 skiers, called ‘Smart Mogul Skiing’ back in 1992, has now grown into one of the premier and largest summer ski training camps in the world. Each summer Olympic, World and X-Games Champions congregate in Whistler to help inspire, teach and mentor the next generation of skiers. Many of these champions were young Momentum campers themselves just a few years ago.

Former camper and Olympic Gold medalist Alex Bilodeau, will be back to coach moguls this summer, along with two-time World Championship medalist Mikhael Kingsbury and Olympians Tami Bradley and Shelley Robertson.

The Freeride crew includes most of the Canadian National Halfpipe Team – World Champions Mike Riddle and Roz Groenewoud and multiple X-Games Champion Sarah Burke, along with pipe stars Simon Dumont and Justin Dorey. With Halfpipe now the newest Olympic discipline, Momentum is poised to help inspire the next generation of champions.

Slopestyle also stands on the threshold of Olympic acceptance and World Champions Kaya Turski and Alex Schlopy will be on the coaching roster. Other top male pros include Colby West, Alexis Godbout, Paul Bergeron, Rory Bushfield, Mike Henitiuk and national team coach Trennon Paynter. Check out the full listing of coaches here: http://momentumcamps.com/cs/coaches/

Camp Director and founder John Smart, himself a two-time Olympian and long time Whistler resident says, "It’s been a fulfilling experience to watch the young campers over the years be inspired by the coaches we bring in and see some of them go on to achieve great things in the sport themselves. Our focus has always been on providing the best quality coaching by bringing in the top names in the sport, along with terrain that is dialled for progression. We use trampolines, water ramp, airbags and a structured coaching system to make sure the campers learn quickly and safely."

"Looking back it’s been amazing to play a big part in the evolution of the sport. We started the camp the very first year moguls was an Olympic event, and have been at the forefront of the new school movement from the beginning, encouraging the energy and innovation of the next generation. Our terrain park is constantly evolving to help fuel this progression."

This year Momentum will be adding a new 22 foot Halfpipe with airbag which the Canadian National Team will be using for training when not coaching and their pipe will be sculpted by World Championship pipe builder Tyson Goodrich. There will also be a second giant airbag in the ‘Jump Zone’ and Momentum’s park will be designed and crafted by local pro skier Chris Turpin.

Momentum will again be offering a special Girls Week from July 1-9, which runs alongside the regular camp session, when they bring in some of the top female skiers in the world to mentor the girls, with added activities with a female focus.

Helping to celebrate their 20th year with a splash, they will again be hosting the ‘Momentum Splashdown’ at the Whistler water ramp on July 5, from 4-6pm. This is a fun water ramp event, showcasing some of the world’s top pros and is a great spectacle for the community and visitors to watch.

Camps begin June 17 with five sessions through to July 25, each session spanning seven to nine days. Accommodating both recreational and competitive youth or adult campers, Momentum Ski Camps is geared exclusively for skiers and offers either moguls, freeride (terrain park/slopestyle skiing) or the hybrid option, which provides three days of coaching in each discipline. Momentum's terrain features are designed by skiers, for skiers providing an exclusive training ground built for the purpose of progressing their campers.

Momentum Ski Camps includes all inclusive packages with accommodation at the Blackcomb Lodge in Whistler Village, airport transfers to Whistler, lift tickets and three meals a day, including a "dine-around" dinner program so campers can experience Whistler's cuisine. Skiing-Only packages are also available. Off-snow activities include pro-level trampoline sessions, access to water ramp and foam pit training, as well as a host of other iconic Whistler activities. For full details about Momentum Ski Camps check out www.momentumcamps.com or call 1 800 949 7949.

ROXY CHICKADEE 2011 WINNERS ANNOUNCED
NATSUKI SATO WINS PRO CATEGORY AND A QUALIFYING SPOT TO THE ROXY CHICKEN JAM IN MAMMOTH, CA

Vancouver, British Columbia (March, 14, 2011) – The 2011 Roxy Chickadee Jam took place this weekend at Grouse Mountain. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, competitors from across the country threw down some progressive riding, including Canadian Roxy athletes Joanie Robichaud and Samm Denena.

Saturday afternoon turned into an AM Rail Jam as the weather continued to bring heavy fog and strong winds. Jamie Clark held her own on the rails enough to impress the judges for first place. Breanna Strangeland from our PRO category won herself best trick with a switch front board to regular. On Sunday, solid rail skills and a switch back five to front five jump combo, landed Natsuki Sato in first place in the PRO category, followed closely by some impressive riding from second place Molly Milligan and third place Claudia Avon. Natsuki Sato will continue on to compete at the Roxy Chicken Jam in Mammoth, CA March 24th – 27th.

Following the pro finals, two chickens and a moose held down the Mascot Rail Jam. As the food chain dictates, the Moose overpowered the two Chickens and took home the $500 first place prize. The event would not have been complete without special guest Roxy pro rider and official MC for the event, Robin Van Gyn. Special thanks to sponsors Snowboard Canada Magazine, SBCwomen.com, Clean Start, Georgia Straight and Grouse Mountain.

DC announces "24 Hours of Winter" Contest during this year’s Grouse Mountain event   Feb 12-13, 2011
DC's 24 Hours of Winter Contest - Grouse Mountain - Feb 12-13, 2011

DC ANNOUNCES "24 HOURS OF WINTER" CONTEST
"Spend 24 hours of winter with DC during this year’s Grouse Mountain event."

Vancouver, British Columbia (February 1st, 2011) – DC will be extending an invite to four retailers giving them an opportunity to showcase how their shop stays busy and rides for 24 hours of winter, during Grouse Mountain’s 36 Hours of Winter February 12-13th 2011. Each retailer will enter a team of three employees who will snowboard for an action packed 24 hours on Grouse.

During this year’s on-hill event, each team must authentically show DC how they keep themselves busy by uploading videos, photos and news updates to Push.ca every three hours during the 24 hour period. New this year is a pre-determined list of 8 on-hill activities allowing each team to undertake challenges while showcasing their shop online at Push.ca. Whomever withstands the entire 24 hours, while successfully completing all the challenges, will win a day of private cat boarding for their team and 6 additional shop staff.

"The original 48 Hours of Snowboarding event with DC and Grouse Mountain in the winter of ’09 was one of the first original events we ran on Push.ca not long after we launched. We loved how it showcased the riders, the sponsors, and what our site was capable of. Now, almost two years later, we’re really excited to step up and make it even better. And since we’re doing it in just one day this time, the pressure’s on! But just wait and see what we’ve got for you: the riders are going to be in for the best and most ridiculous 24 hours of snowboarding and antics they could ever imagine." Matt Houghton publisher of Push.ca

Back in 2009 DC started out this on-hill initiative with one goal in mind, to support our retailers and their staff in a unique way. Now, in 2011, we remain committed to supporting the retailers and their shop staff with a once in a lifetime private cat boarding experience that they will remember for a long time. Mike Scott, Marketing Manager, DC Shoes.

Public attending the 36 Hours of Winter will have the opportunity to visit the main lodge at the top of Grouse Mountain to log into push.ca and view the most recent blog entries on from the competitors of 24 Hours of Winter contest. In addition, the public will be able to enter product giveaways from DC, Push.ca and Grouse Mountain.

ROXY PROFESSIONAL FREESKIER SARAH BURKE CLAIMS GOLD AT 10th ANNIVERSARY OF THE WINTER X GAMES IN ASPEN
Freeskier Sarah Burke Wins Fourth Gold Medal In Women's Superpipe Event

Huntington Beach, CA - January 27, 2011 - Roxy is thrilled to congratulate snow team rider, Sarah Burke, on her amazing performance in Aspen, striking gold in the SuperPipe event at Winter X Games 15. Canadian- born Sarah took her fourth X Games gold medal in the Women's Skiing SuperPipe in her first major competition since a sidelining shoulder injury and surgery in early March 2010.

Known as the pioneer of women's freeskiing competition, Sarah's win in her comeback competition reinforces her position as the world's top female freeskier. Going in to the Women's Skiing Superpipe Finals, Sarah was ranked 6th from the qualifier. The first run was marred by a fall but the win came on an epic solid second run executing the 900, back-to-back flairs and a 720. Sarah's 9 measured 11 feet out on the pipe, the highest trick of the night. Sarah's final score was 91.33 making her the only competitor to break 90, claiming the gold medal. The accomplishment was all the more notable since rehabilitation from injury forced Sarah to only begin practice five days before X Games.

"I think I'm happier about this win than any other win I've had," states Sarah Burke referring to her comeback.

"We are extremely proud of Sarah and her accomplishment," states Danielle Beck, Vice President of Marketing, Roxy. "We knew she had it in her. Not a lot of people can claim four gold X Games medals. Sarah is truly an icon in her field and for all snow sports."

The 2010 Winter X Games X were held at Buttermilk Mountain Resort in Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado. Top athletes from around the world, including Shaun White and Travis Rice competed in snowboarding, skiing, and snowmobile events. The events were nationally televised on ESPN and ABC, check www.expn.com for details.

Both the Boardroom on West 4th Avenue and Lonsdale Avenue will be included in the service which will also link up with a 24 hour bus running from the Lonsdale Quay to downtown Vancouver.

What makes this service unique is the bus will not be running off of traditional gasoline. The DC All-Nighter Bus will run solely on soybean oil recycled from the Grouse Mountain kitchen. "Snowboarder’s all over the world recognize the responsibility we have to our environment and we wanted to make sure the DC All-Nighter Greasebus supported that initiative."

"When I saw Greasebus in Portland last summer I thought "Vancouver needs one of these" and now DC and Grouse Mountain are going to make it happen!" says Fred Glackmeyer of The Boardroom Shop. "The minute people see how simple and subversive the fuelling system on the bus is, they are going to love it. The best part is we can all get through traffic to shred 24/7 and not burn a bunch of gas doing it."

There will be limited space on the bus and seating will be based on a first come, first serve basis. Riders of the DC All-Nighter bus will have a chance to win a 2010-2011 season’s pass to Grouse Mountain, snowboards from DC and Boardroom gift certificates.

In 2009, the Roxy Chickadee Jam invited 3 riders that were nominated into the MGT Snowboard Camp Academy – including now Roxy’s own – Marie Andre Racine Gagnon. Roxy and MGT are excited to announce that Marie-Andre is the winner of this year long contest and will be provided with unique opportunities that could fast track her snowboarding career. Watch out for Marie-Andre at this year’s Chickadee Jam.

The PRO category will have only 35 spots available on a first come, first serve basis. Registration is now open at www.roxy.com/chickadeejam.

Seb Toots Wins Freestyle.Berlin!

October 13 2009, Berlin, Germany - Sixteen year old Seb Toots won the freestyle.berlin on the weekend with a perfect backside 1080 double cork – showing just why he is currently TTR World Tour number one.

"I am super excited to win," said Seb "There were a lot of good riders there so it means a lot to me. It’s like a dream to come out first." The Canadian beat an impressive lineup at the big air contest in its first year in Berlin, taking victory over Eero Ettala and current TTR World Champ Peetu Piiroinen with his backside 1080 double cork. And he made it look easy. "I think the hard part about a backside 1080 double cork is learning it," said Seb. "It’s always scary to try the first time, but once you can control it, it’s a great trick."

His first place comes right after finishing second at the freestyle.ch a few weeks ago.

"Peetu and Eero are really good riders and you never know what they are gonna throw in the contest," said Seb. "Eero got first place at freestyle.ch, and I got second so I am really stoked to be first this time with this good line up of riders."

Congratualtions Seb!

Aug/28/2009 - Seb Toots (O'Neill) and Charles Reid share the title of 2009 Stylewars Stair Masters in Australia

Former 2009 Stair Master Sebastien Toutant and Charles Reid (both from Quebec) were riding as though "they were battling for their lives" and in the end, it was both riders who claimed the title of Stylewars Stair Master, sharing the prize money between them.

After a mind-blowing display of tricks including every single variation possible of a gap-to-270 down the kink rail, first place was just too difficult to score.

Mel Simmons was the head judge and said, "This was probably the hardest judging I have ever done, ever. And I have done a lot of contests."

Simmons has eight years experience in judging and has been traveling internationally judging on the TTR World Snowboard Tour for four years.

"I can quite easily say that it was some of the toughest head-to-head judging that I have ever had to session.

"I would have preferred to nail it down to three hits (in a battle-style format) but unfortunately due to time constraints, it just wasn’t going to happen.

"The riding was just so outstanding it was ridiculous. It was just too damn tight to call, Charles and Seb had absolutely everything on lock. And at the end of the day, we just can’t let one of them walk away with the title.

"It was a unanimous decision between the judges and event organisers, and we are happy with the outcome."

See video of Seb and Charles performances here: www.ttrworldtour.com

Season is starting strong for Seb. See details of his latest victory at the Burton New Zealand Open here: www.oneill.com/sebastien_toutant_can_won_burton_nz_open_slopestyle/

French Canadians, Sebastien Toutant and Charles Reid clinched the top two spots in men’s semifinals.

Toutant taking the top spot by wowing the judges with his signature "Toutsie Roll," a backside doublecork 1080 melon.

Reid couldn't stick his run in the finals, dropping him to the back of the pack. Torstein Horgmo (NOR) threw down in his third and final run with back to back 1080s, giving him an edge and finishing second.

But in the end, Sebastien recreated his winning run from semis by starting off with a backside 270 on the first rail to 50/50 backside 360 on the second rail, into a backside rodeo 540 indy, into a Cab 900 stalefish, followed by a backside 1080 double cork melon, followed by a noseslide on the uprail to alleyoop backside 50/50 on the quarter, finishing with a frontside boardslide on the kinked rail.

"I'm so stoked to win my first contest of the year," said Toutant. "It was a great course, very different. I had fun trying new things and am so happy to do well."

Sebastien Toutant signs new O'Neill deal

O’Neill Global HQ – Warmond, The Netherlands – December 13, 2008 – Freestyle professional snowboarding phenomenon Sebastien Toutant AKA Seb Toots has signed a new three-year deal with O’Neill.

The 16-year-old French Canadian exploded onto snowboarding’s global stage for the first time in 2006, coming from nowhere as a 13-year-old amateur to win the Empire Shakedown contest in Canada. Since then, Toutant has been busy traveling the globe and cementing his reputation as one of snowboarding’s brightest young talents.

Despite setting the bar so high at such a young age, Toutant hasn’t been fazed by the weight of expectation. Instead, the young rookie has gone from strength to strength. After notching up another victory in Canada at the end-of-season Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival, the Montreal native traveled south to New Zealand this summer to compete in the Big Air event at the Billabong Snow Stock Festival. It was there that he chose to unleash his signature Tootsie Roll – a double corked backside 1080 – to claim his first career victory on foreign soil.

Toutant’s appetite for trick innovation and his ability to land the unthinkable have made the industry sit up and take notice. This season, the rookie has been invited to compete in some of the world’s biggest contests, including the TTR 6Star Nissan X-Trail Jam, O’Neill Evolution and Billabong Air & Style Quarterpipe. With Toutant clearly marked out as a star of the future, it surely won’t be long before he fulfills his longstanding ambition to compete in the Winter X-Games. As well as going head-to-head against the world’s best riders, Toutant will also showcase his skills on film this season by putting together another banger video part with one of the world’s finest snowboard film production companies.

Pausing for thought on his way to Tokyo, where he’ll compete in front of 70,000 fanatical spectators at the X-Trail Jam, Seb said: "I'm really stoked to sign with O’Neill. They’re doing a lot of great things in snowboarding, and they’ve been supporting me for a long time already. They really understand what I want to achieve and have always given me the support and guidance I need to step my game up. Looking ahead, I just want to keep progressing and eventually end up pushing the sport as much as riders like Travis Rice and Eero Ettala. Thanks once again to everyone at O’Neill and a big shout out to my team manager Max Henault for all the support."

O’Neill Global Snow Team Manager Franck Corbery is proud to keep Toutant at the heart of the O’Neill Global Youth Team, saying: "Seb has the potential to occupy a position at the pinnacle of freestyle snowboarding for many years to come. More importantly, he’s one of the few riders blessed with the talent and sense of creativity needed to take the sport to the next level. His groundbreaking riding style is bang in line with the innovative character of the O’Neill brand, and this latest deal is a real testament to Max’s hard work and commitment towards nurturing local talent. We’re all super happy to get right behind Toots as he continues to fulfill his incredible potential."

To witness the Toots madness first hand, check out KNOCKOUT – the latest movie by Alterna Films. And keep an eye out for Seb’s signature O’Neill jacket, dropping worldwide in 2009/10.

legends

A Winter Tale

Mythical discoveries in the natural playgrounds of the world, this is the inspirational winter adventure of some of the best riders in the world that has never been told before.

Legends takes O’Neill snowboarders and skiers around the world – from Japan to Turkey – to experience not only the spectacular terrain, but also explore the stories and myths behind each location.

Jeremy Jones, the world’s best freerider, was just one of the snowboarders inspired by the project. Despite endless winters in the stunning natural surrounds and riding of Alaska, it was the journey of discovery that had Jeremy enthralled. "Every year I get presented with a lot of really cool film projects," he says. "When this first came up I was committed to something else. Then they got back to me and said they were going to Turkey, and I said: ‘well, I am going with you."

Along with O’Neill skiers and filmmakers, Nicolas and Loris Falquet, Jeremy travelled to Turkey where they uncovered and immersed themselves in the roots of snowboarding.

"That is one of the best trips I have ever had," says Jeremy. "From a cultural standpoint it was one of the most – ‘oh my god I can’t believe that just happened’."

The group, which included Stefan Gimpl, scored some incredible freeriding in the Cackar Mountains, and also discovered a village where the locals have been snowboarding on homemade wooden boards for 150 years. "Meeting Celime, the oldest rider in the village, was inspirational. This is someone who has been snowboarding for 62 years," says Jeremy. "One of my big questions was – ‘do you have any advice for me?’ He said: ‘ride all the time and you’ll be happy and healthy.’"

The story of Legends starts in the tranquil stunning mountain ranges of Japan, where director, Nicolas Falquet, and his brother, Loris discovered the legend of ‘Yuki-Onna’, whose name means ‘snow woman’.

"We knew no one in Japan when we arrived there," says Loris. "It was a great adventure finding someone who could tell us about the legend of Yuki-Onna." Discovering spectacular backcountry in Japan was no easy task either. "You’re not allowed to ski off-piste in Japan, so they kept on taking away our ski passes," Loris says.

This sense of adventure is encapsulated throughout the entire film as the Falquet brothers explore every corner of the globe during the 2007 season, throughout day and night.

Along with Jeremy Jones and Mitch Toelderer, they rode fresh powder under the full moon in the small Swiss resort of Les Marecottes - an experience which Jeremy Jones won’t forget: "You watch the sun set, the moon rise and then ride down a spine at 4.30am. Then you watch the moon set and the sun rise as you go home. Then you wake up later that day and think – was that a dream? It’s incredible," he says.

With the young and exciting talent of Canadian O’Neill rider Seb Toutant, they explored the legendary snow of the Canadian Rockies, and by plane with one of the legends of the skies, they explored the European Alps with some of the most exciting freestyle riders in Europe at the moment.

Travis Rice Pioneers New Tricks and Technology in Season’s Most Anticipated Snowboard Film

Vancouver, British Columbia (September 24, 2008) – "That’s It. That’s All," the groundbreaking snowboard film produced by Brain Farm arrives to Canadian viewers this fall. Travis Rice invites Canada to join in the epic ride, as he and a dream team crew set out to find the new zones, tricks and a whole new perspective on snowboarding.

"’That’s It, That’s All.’ is epic snowboarding meets Planet Earth," explains Curt Morgan, President of Brain Farm. "The film is a visually stimulating piece of work that pulls in a wider audience by encompassing the most progressive riding in the world with unbelievable travel and nature footage."

In an attempt to push the progression of action sports films, "That’s It, That’s All." raises the bar on both the level of athleticism and quality of production. For two years, producers Rice and Morgan traveled the world in search of conditions that capture the essence of snowboarding. This quest took the riders to New Zealand, Japan, Germany, Canada, Valdez, AK, Jackson Hole, WY and Mammoth, CA. Using the features found in these locations, Rice began inventing new tricks including the first landing of a double backside rodeo 1080 (spinning three times, while going through 2 inversions).

Using state of the art equipment with access to a dream team of snowboarders, the producers created a visual snowboard film that redefines the genre. A dozen models of cameras were used during production including for the first time in core action sports, the Wescam 35, to film stable follow-cam shots on snowmobiles and the Cineflex HD, to capture steady aerial shots from helicopters.

"We put everything we humanly could into the production of this film," said Travis Rice, Snowboarder and Co- Owner of Brain Farm. "Quiksilver and Red Bull stepped up to help us match top caliber riding with the highest possible production quality. Our hope is to showcase snowboarding in a whole new light."
