Surfing Vancouver Island

Canada Surfrider News & Events

Surfrider Victoria & Surfrider Tofino have amalgamated into one chapter: Surfrider Foundation - Vancouver Island Chapter. Merges like this have occurred in places like Tasmania to downsize the executive committee and use only one bank account. There is still a Vancouver chapter, but we will be working under one non-profit group status.

Surfrider has established chapters in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island The Surfrider Foundation has established chapters in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island and we need dedicated volunteers who want to make a difference in our local environment. Come help local chapters of a great organization.

The Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots, non-profit environmental organization. It’s dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education.

  Surfrider News & Events

Dear Vancouver Island Surfrider Community,

Happy August! We're a little taken aback as to how fast the summer months can pass, but luckily, being the ocean lovers that we are, we are making the most of it!

We've been significantly busier than anticipated, thanks in part to the shocking news from the BC Court of Appeal who struck down Victoria's bag ban (more info below). We got angry, we yelled, we used words that would make our parents cry... but then you know what? We got energized. We are more committed than ever to help make positive change - change that will resonate will all residents of BC who are committed to making the world a better place.

One of the most important things that you can do this month - before September 18th at 4pm - is to respond to the BC Government's survey about single-use plastic.

Take the survey here:

*It will take 5 minutes. Make your voice heard and please share the survey with your channels.

The rest of our newsletter is filled with exciting events, educational moments and shout-outs to our amazing sponsors and partners -- we hope that you enjoy it!

If you'd like to financially help us continue our mission work - protecting our oceans, waves and beaches contact Co-Chapter Manager Chris-Ann Lake today: Your support makes a very real difference!!!

Remember - change starts with you. We're happy to help make your collective voices heard, and to lead the way whenever we can.

Your Surfrider Vancouver Island Executive Team

Event Recap:

Gorge Waterway Cleanup

In July, our Combing the Coast program focused our efforts on cleaning up the Gorge Waterway between the Bay Street bridge and the Selkirk Trestle. The tide was low, the sun was shining, and the community was out in full force. With over 120 volunteers in attendance, we were successful in removing 450 pounds of garbage and an astounding 1,735 pounds of metal and glass! Aside from the industrial waste and one (oddly beautiful) barnacle-covered bike, we picked up full garbage cans of soft plastics, styrofoam, hard plastics, and clothing.

A big thank you to The Zone and Watershed Watch Salmon Society for their support and to Atlas Junk Removal for the heavy lifting!

For more information about our Combing the Coast program email Jacquelyn, our CTC coordinator:

Event Recap:

Esquimalt Farmers' Market

Our team had a BLAST tabling at Esquimalt Farmers’ Market during July to promote Plastic Free July to Market attendees! All walks of life came up to our booth to quench their curiosity and share their passion for protecting our oceans! We were able to gain an overwhelming amount of community support for our Ban the Bag campaign that is working across both a municipal and provincial level.

Sunday, August 10th

In case you needed a reason to go on an epic road trip to one of our most beautiful southern island beaches.... here's you go! Join us from 11am - 1pm on Sunday, August 11th,  for a cleanup at the spectacular Sombrio Beach, located along the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. Parking is limited, and there is a bit of a hike in (about 250 meters). Come for the cleanup and then stay to enjoy this incredible spot - we definitely won't be rushing to leave!

Don't forget to bring your own utensils and reusable mugs!

Next Chapter Meeting:

Bitches 'n Barrels: Surfer Babes Makin' Waves!
Tuesday, August 27th

Learn from Bitches ‘n Barrels co-founders, Melissa Morrison and Madison Myatt, about how they have propelled female empowerment in surf through their Vancouver Island-based organization since 2017! From organizing affordable and accessible Tofino surf trips for women, to leading environmental initiatives in our Island communities, these women truly embody the power of the oceans in order to create an inclusive, yet safe, environment for women to learn and progress in the water. Their goal, as community leaders, is to grow the Bitches ‘n Barrels community through more trips and community-building events here in Victoria.

SFVI chapter meetings are a great chance to meet new people, connect with others that have a shared passion, and learn about initiatives and projects within the community! Snacks will be provided, but please bring your own cup!

Please join us at 7pm at Coastline Surf on Broad Street in Victoria. See you there!

Educational Moment:

Ban the Bag Victoria!

For the last year, the City of Victoria  has been leading the Province on plastic pollution prevention by banning single-use plastic bags. Our community was and is so proud to be part of the growing global movement to combat marine pollution, and we have all of you to thank for supporting our Ban the Bag campaign. However, if you have not heard, on July 11th the B.C. Court of Appeal struck down the City of Victoria Checkout Bag Regulation Bylaw. While this is disappointing, overall we know this decision will only strengthen our community and our fight. We have done a lot of lobbying since the repeal and have found that the majority of businesses and retailers do not have plans to go back to using plastic if, of course, consumers do not ask them too. So let’s stick together on this! We are asking you to stay on course by pledging to remain plastic bag free as often as you can!

To read more about this from the City of Victoria go here.

If you’d like to get more involved in our lobbying and campaigning efforts around this issues specifically please email Chris-Ann:

Our PayPal is Back!

Thank you for your patience while we were having technical difficulties with our PayPal but we are thrilled to report that it is now back up and running and we are ready to receive anything you are prepared to give :)

  • One-time donations
  • Monthly contributions

If you live in Oak Bay, View Royal, Colwood or Langford, please contact your city council members and let them know you support a bylaw like the one in Victoria!

In the interest of keeping you warm, cozy and safe - we've decided to cancel this Sunday's beach cleanup at Port Renfrew. Here's the truth, as much as we love a good beach cleanup and seeing all of your smiling faces... we love knowing that you're safe more.

We hope that you enjoy the snow and this crazy blast of winter! Next week we can go back to posting our photos of the daffodils, crocuses and cherry blossoms and making the rest of Canada jealous. And remember, if you do head to a local beach this weekend, pick up what you (safely) can and celebrate our coast's beauty.

Please check our website and Surfrider Vancouver Island Facebook page for further information, and for news about our next beach cleanup!

And, if your bummed about missing the beach cleanup, don't forget to join us at our chapter meeting this Tuesday, February 12th at Coastline Surf and Sport at 7pm.

We will be serving beer all day and hopefully managing to raise some money in the process. Check it all out on Facebook

SETAC Final Report on Sewage ...LETS RALLY!! Wednesday July 12th, 2006
»Hey Surfriders,

As you may know, SETAC is releasing it's final report on Victoria's Sewage problem. This report can go one of two ways; either there is a recommendation to equipt the city with sewage treatment, or not! In the end, this report is going to be a catalyst for some sort of action, and since Sewage Treatement...or the lack there one of our concerns, I think that it's important that we organize to have a few folks show up to hear the recommendations. I know that groups like POOP, Georgia Strait Alliance, TBuck Suzuki Foundation, Seirra Club, Victoria Sewage Alliance, and a few others, are going to be out in full force, and I would love to have Surfrider represented!

That being said, I am planning an impromtu gathering to RALLY! We can bring out our sign, hand out some brochures, and raise some awareness and interest! Who's on board? The meeting is being held at the CRD headquarters, which is in the blocks between Douglas and Government Streets.

To meet on the corner of Government and Fisgard, Weds. July 12th at the VQ Bakery at 12:45pm. From there, we can walk up and chit chat with other enviros before the show begins! I know that this is a work day for most, but perhaps you can take a late lunch?, or maybe your boss owes you favour?, or maybe if you can't come, send your dad, your gramma, your neighbour, or your dog to represent you!!

If you are planning on coming out, can you RSVP me by Wednesday morning at the latest? I'd like to have a sense of how many of us there will be. Thanks in advance and remember...this is a really important day, so come out in your Surfrider best and KICK SOME ASS!

SETAC Report: On July 12th at 1:30 p.m., The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) will report its findings and make a recommendation about the future of sewage treatment to the CRD. » INTERNATIONAL SURF DAY-On June 21st, 25 Surfrider members met down at Clover Point to celebrate International Surf Day and the summer soltice! It was super windy and we didn't do our beach clean up or paddle out; due to high tides and winds, however, we did manage to have a pretty freakin' great time bbq'ing, visiting and listening to Graham play his guitar. Thanks to all of you who braved the wind and cool weather to celebrate this special day!
